Canyelles
canyelles

This municipality is situated only 30’ away from Barcelona and 40’ from Tarragona. It is set in a privileged location, between three national parks: Parque del Garraf, Parque del Foix (and its marsh) and Parque de Olèrdola. Canyelles offers an astonishing valley covered by vineyards, ideal for training throughout the year because of its mild Mediterranean climate.

We propose here two different long distance trails. This enjoyable but challenging circuits, which constantly undulate, will provide you with a full training experience. Check both circuits’ summary to make sure that choose the appropriate one to achieve your training goals. We recommend you to bring enough water, because there is no access to it along the route.

Summary

This is an enjoyable but technical trail, where you will have to make use of your five senses. You will follow trials and paths that will take you around some of the unique hideouts in Garraf mountains.

The length, the total gradient, the rocky ground and the repeated slopes are some of the features of the route that will demand a lot of your attention. The best time to do this circuit is from autumn to spring. Avoid the central months of the year because of the high temperatures. But if you still decide to do this trail in summer, it is recommendable to start early in the morning and make sure you carry plenty of water, because there is no access to it during the trail.

The circuit starts from the centre of Canyelles (Plaça del Casal), moving along the stream that goes across the village. Shortly after, by path, you will get into the forest. Continue the ascend through a trial that will bring you to the summit of Pic de l’Àliga, a privileged lookout over Canyelles and the central region of Cataluña.

Keep moving through some paths and fields until you meet Coll de Daltmar. In gentle ascent you will reach Turó de les Tres Partions (whose names refers to its central location, junction point of the three nearest villages). This lookout domains a great part of the Catalan central coast. Leave behind the summit, cautiously descending by a rocky way.

Continue by path (some parts are a bit technical) and, after passing a stretch of constant slopes, you will come across the Torrent de Sant Joan. Follow a path (surrounded by plenty of vegetation) that will lead you to the remains of Casa Alta, an antique farmhouse. After that, you will start the most athletic section of the route, a long stretch by forest track.

After a short descent, take a sharp turn to the left and keep walking parallel to the Torrent de la Gargosa until you get to Pla de les Palmeres. From here, there is a technical section by path with rocky ground and constant up and down slopes. After a few kilometers, you should be back in Turó de les Tres Partions. Keep descending from the esplanade of Pic de l’Àliga through an intense and entertaining last section, that will lead you to the starting point in Canyelles.

WATER: There is access to water in Canyelles. There is no access during the rest of the circuit. In case of emergency, you will pass by some farmhouses.

TOURISM: Canyelles; historical farmhouses.

Summary

This is a non-technical route that will be done mainly by track. In the first kilometers you will notice some ropes, that could be used as handrails for extra support. This is the perfect choice for a long distance training, with constant rhythm and almost no inclines.

The best time to do this circuit is from autumn to spring. Avoid the central months of the year because of the high temperatures. But if you still decide to do this trail in summer, it is recommendable to start early in the morning and make sure you carry plenty of water.

Starting from Plaça del Casal, go across the town following the stream until you turn right in the first street you find, passing by the ADF warehouse. Leaving the paved ground behind, follow the wide path that eventually will narrow. After crossing a road and doing a flat section, turn right and you will get to the climbing wall of “La Facu”. In these walls you will find the rope that will help you along the rocky ascent, till you get to a track.

Following that downhill track, turn right and continue until you find a village. Go across it and shortly after you will be in Parque de Olèrdola. Continue by a track which tends to drop and with good going terrain, moving parallel to the course of an old stream.

You will eventually get to a picnic area in the village of St Miquel d’Olèrdola. After getting some water (if needed), you will start a long and flat section which starts by path and will continue by dirt trail, leading you towards Moja area. You will pass by some vineyards and by Cases de la Vall. From here, cautiously walk a short stretch by road until you turn in the first path on your right.

Shortly after you will find a track that ascends to Turó de Senabra. Continue that same wide track towards Coll Blanc and take a 90º turn to the right, to descend through Vall de Sant Joan. This will be done by a narrow path that, after a couple of technical sections, will take you to Casa Alta.

From there, follow the track that on constant uphill will bring you to Pla del Pic de l’Àliga. The descent to Canyelles will be done first through a trial and then by an easy to follow track.

WATER: There is access to water in Canyelles and St. Miquel de Olèrdola.

TOURISM: Canyelles; Olèrdola; historical farmhouses.
