TRAIL RUNNING IN EL SEGRIÀ

El Segrià has a total surface area of 1369 km2, more than 163,000 inhabitants and 38 different municipalities. The presence of a major river has not only influenced the region’s irrigation system, which is based on an important network of historic irrigation channels and canals (including the Urgell, Aragó i Catalunya, and Pinyana canals), but also made it a pioneer in the development of hydraulic power. For centuries, this comarca (local district) has been predominantly agricultural, with vegetable gardens, fruit, cereals, forage and olives being its traditional sources of wealth. During the 20th century the industrial sector gradually grew in importance and the main economic activity of the city of Lleida is now shared between its industrial and tertiary sectors. The other municipalities of El Segrià have remained essentially agricultural in character and have specialised in the production of fruit (including pears, apples and peaches).

As far as culture is concerned, it is important to highlight the monumental patrimony of Lleida. One of the city’s most emblematic buildings is its Seu Vella (Old Cathedral), which was consecrated in the year 1278. This forms part of a group of buildings that stands high above the old city, looking down upon it from the top of La Suda (a former Moorish fort). The Catedral Nova (New Cathedral), which was completed in 1790, is a neoclassical building with three naves of equal height. The Romanesque-style church of Sant Llorenç dates from the late Romanesque period (13th century) and was finished in the Gothic style (in the 14th century). The Paeria (City Hall) is a 13th century construction.
